Emma Watson in ELLE Spain (March 2013)

Our first encounter with the actress had to be canceled at the last minute due to Hurricane Sandy, who on its way through NYC, paralyzed filming of her upcoming movie “Noah” directed by Darren Aronofsky, with Russell Crowe and Anthony Hopkins. But instead of staying locked up at home, waiting for the storm to pass, Emma (Paris, 1990) decided to provide help “We were very afraid, the impact of the storm in the city was much worse than expected, but people faced with great resolution, everybody continued their occupations, helping to restore normalcy. I love NYC. During the storm, I worked with Meals on Wheels, an organization that distributes food to people in need” says Watson, who divides her life between London and NYC “I have not had a place of permanent resident” says the actress, who began her career at the age of ten, playing Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter saga (the most successful in film history) a character that has provided world fame, but it also consumed her childhood and adolescence. In fact, she has spent her life in a non-stop shooting, but nevertheless, she doesn`t have the profile of a child star, but quite the opposite.

Emma Watson was born in Paris, five years after the divorce of her parents (both lawyers) she moved with her mother and brother to Oxford (England) “My parents have a very academic mind, they see my actress career as a normal profession, and that has helped me, they are very normal and balanced people, they work hard, I inherited from them the work ethic” Watson was seven when she read the first book of Harry Potter, and with only ten years, she was a global superstar thanks to the success of the first film in the series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Then came another seven films in the series, and at the age of 17, she was already an independent woman

Despite her apparent fragility, her relaxed and polite speech, she seems to hide an iron will, and a perseverance out of the ordinary. The profession has ensured her a prosperous life (an estimated personal fortune of around 40 million euros) However, she wanted to continue studying, and now lacks only one year to graduate in English Literature at the University of Brown (Providence, Rhode Island) All without stopping her acting career. She was so convinced about continuing her education, that she decided to give a warning to the powerful Warner Bros… they had to allow Emma attend the University while filming the last two Harry Potter movies, or they would have to find another Hermione, and she won. But the passage through the classroom was not as good as she hoped “I wanted to go to college, like all the people of my age and have a normal life, and in doing so, I realized how unusual my situation was, there were times when I felt very alone, very different from my peers, that`s something I’ve thought a lot. I asked myself… who is really normal? We all have our things, we just have to remember that we are all human beings”

After ten years of success with Harry Potter, author JK Rowling ended the saga, and Watson had to show to the world that she could do more than magic tricks “I was terrified, but happy and excited at the same time, it was a sweet moment and at the same time, something bitter. Filming had become my routine, I missed knowing exactly what I had to do and where. I was very comfortable. However, it’s nice to do other things and have more control over my life”

The following steps have taken Emma to indie films, first with the movie My Week With Marilyn, and then with The Perks Of Being A Wallflower, a nice story of love and hope, which is currently being screened at cinemas in Spain. Last year she was under orders from Sofia Coppola “I told my people that I wanted to work with Sofia, and she was just preparing the Bling Ring. Everything fit perfectly. The truth is that I do not seek specific roles, I want to work with certain directors, people who have convictions, who want to create something new, and I want to be part of that creative project” and it seems that she is getting it, because in the summer, she will be part of the next big project of director Guillermo del Toro.

Despite her self-discipline, and being a person with clear ideas, she admits having gone through tough times “My rhythm is frantic, I’m trying to find the balance between the personal and the professional, I must take care. When you work hard, you have to be smart, get enough sleep, do exercise and eat well, otherwise it is impossible to achieve your goals. I also try to spend time with my family and friends. It’s easy to lose the perspective of what you do, and there is a risk of missing out, this is being a long learning process” Popularity is another of her unresolved issues “Fame is the aspect of my life that I find most difficult to assume, I do not like to be judged for what I do off screen. Over the years, I have realized something; it is out of my control what people say, and there’s not much I can do about it. That`s why I will not going to talk about my intimacy with the press. Besides, I am very good at choosing the places where I can be, and my lifestyle really helps. I must be smart and just accept it” Ironically despite trying to have a shield, she is exposed publicly in her personal Twitter account (www.twitter.com/emwatson) “There are things I like to teach, things related to theater, cinema and music, I like to share it with my fans, and it works very well”

There is no better indication to know which is the influence of an actress, like a contract as the face of a prestigious brand of cosmetics, and Watson can include that in her great curriculum, because she is the ambassador of Lancome, along with other stars like Julia Roberts and Kate Winslet. A great achievement, since they both have twice the age of Emma “I know, it’s crazy. I am only 22 years and I’ve done many things. I feel very fortunate for the opportunities I’ve had. Everyone asks me about what I am going to do when I am 30, for me it is essential getting everything I have so far, but I can not imagine what is to come, my life takes unexpected turns and I am deeply grateful, it’s amazing”

But not only important brands in the world of beauty had their eyes on her, but also the world of fashion. She has been the image of the popular brand Burberry, and also collaborated with People Tree and Alberta Ferretti. But no one sees Emma as the prototype of an actress turned into designer, that was just a flirtation “Fashion amused me when I was younger, but I’ve done enough in this area, and I don`t thing I am going to do it again. I am aware that the promotion of a film is a very important part in my profession, so I get involved, even dressing for a red carpet is work, but now I’m focused on filming and acting, I want to become the best performer possible. .. who knows, maybe in the future I want to direct, produce and write, but if I’m definitely going to create something, it will be in that area”

Watson understands her constancy in all aspects of her life, that includes something as essential as ecology “I think it’s very important to know what products you use on your face or from where are the clothes you’re wearing. At least I try. I am obsessed with recycling, I just buy organic food and seasonal. I am trying not to eat much meat and I usually prepare my own meals. I work hard to meet those little things, they make me a better human being. We all must be more responsible”

For someone who seems to have things so clear, it is inevitable to ask about the plans for the coming years “I plan to finish the University, although that depends on the start of filming of the movie of Del Toro. I have no hurry, I’m studying because I want to, it is a personal purpose, and a real treat being able to do it in my spare time. Maybe it will take two more years, I don`t know… we’ll see” But knowing Miss Watson, surely we will see her soon throwing her graduate cap into the air.
