  • Emma is a modern Greta Garbo:

2 DIVAS in an instant

On April 15, 1990 the fate of Greta Garbo and Emma Watson was joined forever. A magical coincidence in which the Swedish actress handed her success over to the young English one.

New York. April 15, 1990. A swarm of photographers and cameramen crowd together at the gates of one of the hospitals in the city before the announcement of the death of Greta Garbo. That same day, 5,830 miles away, in Paris, the Watsons welcome the little Emma, a girl who, years later, will be renamed by JK Rowling as Hermione. Simple coincidence or divine reincarnation? Who knows. But the diva's words shortly before her death make one think about the nature of this incident. "I feel a terrible need to be reborn like a phoenix from its ashes."

Similar in character ...
If there's one thing that differentiates Emma Watson and Greta Garbo from other colleagues, it's the discretion that has always surrounded them. Protective of their privacy, none seems to have used the hustle of Hollywood. In 2009, the English actress took refuge at Brown University to study literature, the same year she was named the highest grossing actress of the decade. For her part, the protagonist of Ninotchka put an end to her career at age 36, when she was helding the throne of the highest paid performer of America; a decision that released her from the harassment of the media. "Being in the press is terribly stupid. It's good that it covers the important people. But I have nothing to contribute."

... And matching styles.
Flats, masculine blouses, British coats and natural makeup. Greta Garbo and Emma Watson have set the trend thanks to the simplicity and delicacy of their classic looks with an androgynous touch. Maybe that's why both were recruited as models being just a teen: the Swedish actress, for a department store in her country of origin and the English one for Burberry and LancĂ´me. One more coincidence or the proof of a connection?

  • Among The List's Most Inspiring Women in Film and TV

Emma Watson:

As if being Hermione Granger wasn’t inspiring enough, Emma Watson has gone on to become a UN ambassador, which saw her become the face of #HeforShe: a campaign which extended an invitation to men to participate in the conversation about gender equality. She was named Celebrity Feminist of the Year in 2014 by the Ms. Foundation For Women, and recently she addressed the rumours that she was dating Prince Harry with an on-point retort: a link to Alfonso Cuaron’s Little Princess, accompanied by the comment, ‘marrying a Prince not a prerequisite for being a Princess’.

  • Matt McGorry (Orange Is the New Black, How to Get Away with Murder) cried during Emma's #HeForShe Q&A

“I had a really amazing and powerful day a couple weeks ago, where I read Sheryl Sandberg’s book ‘Lean In’ for a Cosmo article I did. I think it opened my eyes to a lot of things I took for granted or didn’t quite realize were going on,” McGorry said at last weekend’s GLAAD Media Awards.”

From there I ended up watching Emma Watson’s UN speech and crying during it. This was on International women’s day and she did a big Q&A with Facebook — I spent a lot of the day sort of crying, but in a wonderful way… I feel really passionate about this,” he said. “It’s something I've been trying to continue to support now, on social media.”

  • Karlie Kloss follows Emma's footsteps

The model decided to attend New York University this fall.

"Oh," she grins, "I'm going to continue working as a model. I want to do it all! And I think it's possible to keep working while you go to school. Christy Turlington did it. Natalie Portman did it. Emma Watson just did it! And those are just women in the public eye, but plenty of others do it, too. You know, women around the world are great at multitasking. We do it well."

  • Sophie Sumner (model and one of Emma's best friend) mentions her

“There will be times when I just want to sit down with a cup of tea and a biscuit and have a cry with my mum back home. But obviously she’s not here so it’s fantastic to have made these friends on Taking New York because they’re now my support system for when I’m missing Oxford and my family.

“Thank goodness for Skype.

“My school friends and teachers from Oxford are all so proud of what I’ve done. Of course Emma (Watson) is super proud of me too.”

Miss Sumner is hoping to catch up with friends when she returns to Oxford in a few weeks.

  • #2 in World's Top Feminist Icon list

Angelina Jolie has been named the world’s foremost feminist icon just days after she underwent potentially life-saving surgery to remove her ovaries.

The Hollywood actress, who had a preventative operation last week in a bid to eliminate a cancer risk, came out top of a new poll naming women’s rights champions.

Jolie took pole position in the survey by fashion house Rose & Willard for her work with the United Nations (U.N.) and her campaigns to end sexual assaults on women in war zones.

She saw off competition from Harry Potter actress Emma Watson, another U.N. ambassador who launched a high-profile pro-feminism drive for the organization last year.

Watson came in second place, while other stars in the top five included fellow actress Jennifer Lawrence and renowned feminist author Germaine Greer.

Heidy Rehman, founder of Roseandwillard.com, says, “We are driven by the empowerment of women and celebration of their femininity, which Angelina Jolie embodies perfectly. The poll shows that this is the brand of feminism currently favored by the public. Emma Watson is another exciting example of this… her HeForShe campaign fights for society to respect and embrace feminine qualities.”
