Chris Columbus directed both first 'Harry Potter' films, 'Philosopher's Stone' and 'Chamber of Secrets'. During an interview for the promotion of his most recent movie 'Pixels', he mentioned the trio.
Columbus told me that he was surprised that actors Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint ended up being as great as they were.
“I’d be lying if I said I knew by movie seven they would have turned into the people that they did,” Columbus said. “We cast them because they felt really so perfect for the roles.” He said the first movie has a lot more cuts than the rest because the kids had such a hard time crafting a performance. The second film fixed that though and then, when Columbus stepped back to produce the third film, everything clicked into place. “By the time we got to three they had really developed into terrific actors,” he said. “I was very proud of that. I look back on it and I’m extremely proud of it, and I don’t tend to go back and think about old stuff that much.”

I like that.All the more it becomes clear how much the young actors have grown in their craft. I liked their acting in 1 and 2; I thought they did well for such a tender age, but it just comes to show that Chris Columbus coached them alot to get to that last result. Even in Deathly Hallows 1 where Emma (Hermoine) goes off on how logical she is which allows her to...(that is when they put 2 +2 together that the Sword of Gryff. only collects that which makes it stronger...like the Basalisk venom that destroys the horocraux. ) I just thought be quiet Emma..,I felt almost embarassed. But all in all they are great films which I enjoy again and again. Every once in awhile- at least once a year- I start watching film 1 again. Watching them it is clear to see just how much better they got from film to film.
Emma was great in Noah and Perks and I am looking forward to Regression and all the other films listed in imdb. Emma and Rupert are my favorite of the trio. Rupert, I think, was brilliant was excellent right from the beginning. It is quiet around him now; I hope he is doing something to hone his skill at Lamda or Rada.A good solid education in literature and drama, and an understanding of character development in the written word is necessary to understand in order to bring that understanding to the big screan. Very few are a Leonardo diCaprio who shows great depth in the understanding of his characters and is able to portray that on the screen. Since Leo I have seen no one with that skill without having the proper education. Acting is an intellectual and practical skill which needs to be educated. Only a fool would think that is unnecessary.
