Florian Gallenberger: "Emma Watson wanted to show she can play an adult woman"

During a press conference for the release of 'The Colony' in the UK, Florian Gallenberger (director) and Richenda Carey (Gisela in the movie) talked about Emma:

Was it a difficult film to shoot?

FG: Somehow every film is a difficult film to shoot, but it was very difficult in this case for many reasons. We initially wanted to make this as a German film but it turned out that it would be impossible to raise enough money in Germany to make a film that size. The choice then was to either forget about the project or try to shoot it in English with, potentially, a bigger market. When Emma (Watson) took on the part, that changed the project into a different film entirely, which was absolutely great.

The making of the film was difficult in that, for financing reasons, we shot half of the colony in Luxembourg and half of the colony in Munich. It puts a lot of pressure on you and you feel insecure about whether that will work together and whether it will fit together. As always, it was too little time, too little money and too little of everything but I think that’s just the reality of filmmaking. Apart from that, it was also a great experience and we were a great crew who had the desire to make the film work.

How did the role [of Gisela] play on your conscience?

RC: It obviously wasn’t very comfortable, but I think you simply have to put yourself in a place where you were that person, brought up in a loveless way. Obviously, it’s very uncomfortable to play someone that cruel and unpleasant but that’s the game and that’s what we do. Michael found it incredibly hard playing Paul, that was a really horrible journey for him.

FG: I remember you suffered when you had to beat Emma with that rolled up piece of hosepipe and you were just resisting. It was difficult for Richenda, she didn’t feel too great about it.

RC: Emma being a third of my age and a third of my size! This was the first day of shooting and I was given a rolled up piece of hosepipe and was told I had to whip Emma, one of the world’s most popular actresses! And I questioned it and Florian was like, “yes, you do”.

FG: Now that makes me look very bad [laughs].

How do you feel her fans will react to seeing Emma in a very different role?

FG: I have no idea. I think that the role is something entirely different: here she plays an adult woman, which is something she hasn’t done before. It was important for her to take the part so she could show that it’s not only teenage girls that she can portray. Another thing she cares about is that it is the girl who saves the boy and not the other way round, as it normally would be. This was something she really cared about and goes hand in hand with her work for female empowerment.

Interesting and shows Emma's commitment to her graft and the hard work she always puts in.

I genuinely feel happy for her and proud of her acting skills and it is always warming to hear positive remarks about her from others.

I like that statement from Gallenberger, and shows that she is looking for development, but I still think she needs serious fine tuning in her methodology in acting- maybe even have a method. She is talented, no doubt, but she has not developed as far as other actresses in her age-group.

I don't think so she works hard and always delivers she is not showy, portraying the character instead of playing versions of herself like a lot of A-list do.

@ Ross Taggert,
as you are very close to Emma you can easily answer the Question why Emma does not appear on stage but only on film?

While she was at Brown- after Radcliffe's second run in Theater- she said that she wanted to do theater yet. Well, Rupert beat her to the theater without making any proclamation before hand. I am beginning to believe not even half of 'I was so obsessed when I read...(Queen of Tearling). 'I want to be a Renaissance woman; I want to write, direct, paint. I want to do everything.' Well yes, she has a book-shelf and is a feminist activist that wants more rights in Hollywood.

Emma has always been a girl with many hobbies, the problem for me is that it has many interests but does not quite feel comfortable, or that's the impression given me. For me, my hobbies is best left aside, and be the best in two things and not be the best in nothing
I hope you have understood, because my English is bad: /

I like that you think I am close to Emma sadly I am not as yet :) If I was to guess I would say firstly she does not want to simply jump on the band wagon of celebrities "doing" the west end. Secondly she will wait until she has mastered the craft she has not done stage work formally since she was young and always does the work before taking something on.

We all want to do everything immediately when we are young and she like us will do it in time as life allows.

Lots of people give there time to good causes and not many would regard them as a hobby or in any way casual to there lives. Your English is fine Anno its you reasoning I question :)

Emma is an activist and an actor in both she is renowned across the world. She seems to see that has a start for most it would be enough.

To say that other A-listers are showy is unfair. There are enough young actors out their, especially females that are younger than Emma and better. Just look at the young US McKensie Foy in Interstellar. She is much better now than Emma was in HP. Others are Shailene Woodley, Saoirse Ronan, Jennifer Lawrence, Chloe Grace Moretz- only nameing a few.
I am not saying she is not good, I am only saying that she must do more to improve. She has come to a standstill. I don't see the movie offers pounding on her IMDB in comparison to other young actors.

Again you are untitled to your opinion but that like mine is all it is. Emma's work speaks for itself as does her talent this does not detract from other people work or achievement why do you need to compare and always so unfavorably.

No offense but where are your acting credentials that she has to do more to live up to your entirely arbitrarily standards. Being a nit sharp today but seem to be the only one who thinks insulting young Women is not OK.

The last Anon was respectful. He/She thinks Emma must work more to improve, well, I agree. There's nothing insulting here, just opinions.

HeforShe is working well anything can be better and you are welcome to contribute. The last one may have been better the other Anno but start from the top and put your name in place of Emma's

There is no such thing as just Opinions if you don't care about something you wont have one.

I have been a fan of Emma for more than 12 years now. She has come a very long way. Unlike many actresses her age, she does not come from an acting family or lives in the States. Pretty much her life is about her family, her friends, her studies and her acting. Many younger actresses tend to go all out for acting. I think Emma finds time for a little of everything is more her style.
