Emma Watson: "Having access to contraceptives empowers women"

Emma is among the "6 Influential Women" who gave their opinion on "Why We Need Worldwide Contraceptive Access Now"

"Having access to contraceptives empowers women to determine their own lives. I am grateful to the women in my life who have discussed these things with me openly and informally, but this tended to happen more when I got older and I wish I had been around those kind of conversations younger. I also think the sex education I had at school was important.

By exercising their personal choices and taking control of their own bodies, women will hopefully be able to learn better, work better, and choose safe and fulfilling relationships. A world where women were empowered in this way, I believe, would make a huge difference."

The roles this woman thinks are hers to take on is unbelieveable.

Could it be that we women need world-wide contraception so that we can be more accessible to men without consequences. Just for the info, there are women who have taken contraceptives (the pill) for years and have become infertile.
Vouching for contraceptives is a rauchy feminism.

How on Earth is anything she said here wrong? She wants all women to be given education about contraceptives (which some of you also apparently need) and to have the choice to take it or not. She's not talking about infiltrating it in the running water.

It has the support of number of eminent women and see universally by the medical profession as a good thing.

Such education belongs in the family- thank goodness for home schooling in USA.

Hail the Pill Pope. So Humane Vitae was true. I'm an atheist but the pill pope got it right in modern society.

There are many forms of contraception and not all parts of the world have what the west has to offer that is the thrust of the initiative. It could save and improve the lives of potentially millions of women across the world.

Who is EW to present these possibilities. Why do we have doctors in this world? She just has to stick her nose into everything, but comes up with nothing. I find her irritating. On does not just advocate contraceptives; you have to know what you are talking about. Believe me medical doctors are irritated by people like this who pretend to know what they are talking about.

She was asked about Worldwide contraceptives access. She didn't decide to suddenly talk about it. And what makes you believe that she doesn't know what she's talking about?

That's why sexual education is important, to avoid stupid comments.

I just saw Emma's interview with Caitlin Moran. Apparently she thinks the world of George Orwell's 1984 was a utopia.

These people.

How could giving people simple ACCESS to contraceptives be anything but a good thing? There are NO medical, scientific, or empirical drawbacks to contraceptives as a whole. There are many different types of contraceptives (not just "the pill"), and many people in the world have access to zero of them.

The best contraception is chastity. I participated in a group of young adult discussion about premarital sex and marriage. One young adult (college student) announced the women you have sex with you don't marry- their fun. A woman you know to be chaste that is who you want to marry. I wanted to punch him, but he said something very important about kind of girl is marriagable. I was surprisedhow many young men agreed with him.

Okay so you've been a "good" girl and married your man, however if you don't want to start a family immediately or want to space your children out then a knowledge of contraception, what types are on offer, where it is available and the cost are important facts to know - all power to Emma for spreading the message.

I've said it before, Eden, I'll say it again. You could make this blog a much happier experience by barring comments from anons. People who can throw smack from the cheap seats, secure in the knowledge that they can't be identified, are far more likely to contribute angry garbage than worthwhile discussion. You've been being worn down by bigots and haters lately. THis won't solve that problem entirely, but even the requirement of being logged into a google account will bring a level of recognizability that will tame most of the creeps.

You don't need a system like Neil Sampat makes for Will McAvoy, just a simple Blogger setting.

Anon above, the man who made the sex/marriage comment is a misogynist. Thanks for that awful anecdote, though.

It is not a matter of being a good girl, but a matter of keeping your self-respect and not allowing yourself to be a man's pin-ball machine. I work with girls, young women in the social-work area, beleive me there is a lot of pain out there regarding these issues.
