Emma Watson: "I like not knowing exactly how the world works"

not sure if this is the best place to put this but i just got back from seeing colonia. after some of the early bad reviews i was pretty worried but it was much better than i expected. i think those reviews were overly harsh. it was a very well-crafted thriller, i was on the edge of my seat and incredibly anxious for most of the film (which is what you want for this sort of movie). everyone in my screening seemed to enjoy it as well. there was spontaneous applause about 3 times at "heroic" moments and a bit of laughter too at the very few humorous parts.
as for the acting, both emma and her co-star were perfectly fine (he actually had a lot less screen time than i expected -- it was mostly emma). they had good chemistry and i believed them as being deeply in love, enough to risk their lives for each other. for what i consider to really be emma's first starring role (perks, bling ring, and noah were more ensemble casts), i thought she did very well and carried the movie (along with the actor who played the creepy cult leader -- he was great). i still saw a bit of her awkwardness -- like she's overthinking the acting and so is too self-conscious and not totally natural -- BUT much less than in previous films. i think her acting is definitely improving, and she certainly has a great screen presence. the camera just loves her.
overall, an enjoyable movie and a good role for emma. hope you don't mind me leaving my review here :)
just another thing i wanted to add... i was so scared of how embarrassing and offensive the boyfriend pretending to be mentally disabled would be after some reviews describing it. i was prepared to cringe hard at those scenes but truly, it was not that bad. it was done pretty subtly and was quite necessary to the plot, there's really no other way his character would have survived. so yeah, if you were concerned about that like me, don't worry. in the context of the film it makes sense and isn't over-the-top.
Florian Gellenberger is a good director. I expected no less than the comment that I had just read. Emma is a good actress and still young in the business. She played one role for over 10 years. Sadly, I am pretty sure that she has read or heard some of the harsh crizicism concerning her acting, which would render self-conscious at times. She does not need to be that though. Shhe has to believe that she is a good actress because she is. The person who does not improve in who they are in what they do is a sad case. We grow and improve until the day we die.
Thank you JL and I for one will certainly see this film and I look forward to it. I also agree with Anon above about the harsh criticism from some quarters. I read on one such site that if she would give up acting they wouldn't mind what else she did - until the poor girl started doing He for She and they then proceeded to tear her apart for doing that too. However, whether it is Emma, JLaw or any other young actor I do like to watch them progress in their careers and would only criticise if I could do better - which I can't. :)
