Patton Oswalt has joined what’s shaping up to be an interesting cast for The Circle, the James Ponsoldt-directed drama based on Dave Eggers’ best-selling book. He joins Tom Hanks, Emma Watson, John Boyega and Karen Gillan in the pic about a college graduate (Watson) who goes to work at the Circle, an Internet monopoly that links users’ personal emails, social media, banking and purchasing with their universal operating system. The result is one online identity and a new age of civility and transparency — which turns out not to always be a good thing.
The busy Oswalt will play Tom Stenton, the tight-lipped, Italian suit-wearing, tough-dealing throwback to a 1980s Wall Street trader who commands respect. He’s one of the Three Wise Men who are founders of the conglom, alongside characters played by Hanks and Boyega.
The movie was one of the hottest titles in Cannes this year, when Alicia Vikander was attached to star. Watson took over when Vikander exited among a bevy of other offers — she ended up landing a lead role in the next Jason Bourne movie. The Circle is expected to draw interest from buyers at the just-underway Toronto Film Festival as a hot title, even though it isn’t anywhere in the lineup.
