Elizabeth Nyamayaro gave an interview to ELLE UK about her fight for equality. She mentioned her work the UN, and of course He For She with Emma.
When I first met our Goodwill Ambassador Emma Watson over lunch in London in 2004 [note from WU: she meant 2014], it was an immediate meeting of minds. Her first question was, "What are my deliverables?" I laughed a little, but was impressed by her dedication and I'm proud to call her my co-creator and partner. She's more than a celebrity face. In fact, we never engage with her as a celebrity but as a thought leader. What most people don't know is that she has been working full-time on the project since day one. We message on WhatsApp twice a day, and there are weekly meetings. She even reads and rewrites all the copy on the website.

Amazing Emma!!
Does reinforce my argument in the other thread about her character and commitment. Way to go (again!) Em.
Interesting insight! She's really working on this, unlike you'd (perhaps wrongly) expect of a typical celebrity. Maybe she's taking this as a bit of "normality" outside the world of hollywood acting, which, all said and done, is quite an unusual life to live.
"Thought leader." Uh huh. More like brainwashed puppet. I wouldn't be surprised. The poison of SJW pandering has seeped even into courses that have nothing to do with feminism. It doesn't matter if she went to college for art history and english lit. Most likely her "professors" had a collectivist slant to their classes. Brainwashed puppet.
I'm glad I skipped college.
Great to see people coming with new arguments... Oh, wait.
Eden, I understand your frustration, at the circular nature of these comments, and generally I scroll through these threads without commentating, but, at least in my view, phrases such as "thought leader" and the upcoming 'gender equality in academia' presentation do little to dispel the notion that the heforshe project is essentially a group of well educated middle class females dealing with issues affecting themselves.
Now I'm sure Ross will mention his facebook friend that is supposedly aware of heforshe fieldwork in disadvantaged communities, but when do we see Emma engage with those communities or even mention them?
EW attending functions in Davos or NY is I'm sure part of her remit, but, at least for me to take this project seriously, I'd like to see evidence of change or at least action which benefits the people that really need it.
It's been nearly 2 years since the project has been launched.
What "deliverables" have been reached?
Perhaps the problem is the perception that Emma or agencies she works with are selling what are doing. They are not, They are just showing what problems the world has and what they are doing to help.
Read the piece Emmas first question was "What are my deliverables" she is doing her part in her area the best she can and asking people she can reach to do what they can.
I applaud the effort and do what I can as do many others. That is it no fashion comments or ill conceived conspiracy theories matter.
It is always easy and alway useless to criticise others efforts than contribute your own.
She is just a face of something that can market her as this feminist idol. Since she joined HfS she was exaggerated in the media. So much so that she was deemed a better 'feminist' than feminist who have been dedicating years into making a change. She had no problem taking credit for it. It's been said they wanted her because she is a popular face. That's all. I still believe HfS is lazy. You guys are right. It's been two years and what changes have there been made? It's no rival to anything else everyone else is doing. So far Emma has done is start up a book club. Attend places for press. Interview other feminists. Okay? Thousands of people are doing virtually the same thing. It's because this is Emma Watson that it's given this much empty hype for something that hasn't made much of an impact. Sure, it's done something to shift perspective I'm guessing, but like I said, so has others. I don't respect her much for striving for equality when she's someone who evades her taxes when people lesser than her have to pay theirs, and she is only contributing to the inequalities and unfairness that adds to the disadvantage - don't use the her PR made excuses for her privacy crap with me. Don't be that gullible.
Now you blame her for the world we live in. She is doing the best she knows how from when she started on her path to activism. Better than some worse than others, so what.
I am doing what I can as there many others, better than some worse than others, so what.
The is all voluntarily work we do it to try an make things better. If it does not make you lofty standards Anon, so what.
You are in a group that compain when Emma is out of the public eye, also when is is visable. She takes great pains to separate work and voluntary work. Is there crossover yes. So what!
All better than doing nothing or trading insults you will agree.
My lofty standards? Listen, if she wants to hype herself up as a feminist/ activist then you're damn right I will set 'lofty' standards. So far nothing has been delivered. Clearly I'm being painted as a hater to you lot (no surprise there). I was just saying that why she gets so much praise for something so mundane when there's far better people who should be getting the attention is beyond me. That's my opinion. Yours is yours.
She is doing something, yes. But she shouldn't be treated as if she's been a feminist icon since birth. I don't agree with how overblown this entire thing is. If she kept subtle about it I wouldn't mind. I don't care for HfS because it hasn't made an impact considering the expectations they created for themselves.
Yes she is held in high regard as this article shows and by people how have the facts to judge. It is true feminist like myself credit her with our involvement with equality and other causes but no one is saying she invented them.
She wasn't a feminist from birth. Quotes suggest that she WAS a free thinking artist before the college "professors" that were SUPPOSED to be teaching her art history and english literature instead started indoctrinating her with SJW bullshit.
And she fell for it. Such a disappointing waste.
I couldn't agree more, don't think you're a hater :). You explain very well why you feel this way and have good arguments, unlike ross who doesn't even respond to what you're really saying and your arguments. When you talk about emma evading taxes all he says is "now you blame her for the world we live in"
and "she's doing the best she can". Lol
who does someone have to blow her horn? There are much more important things then feminism. Let's talk about celebrities making millions and the teacher, who worked hard for a degree in US has very low pay? Yes equality of pay. Let's start with better pay for teachers and work on that. They take care of and educate the young and are held in low regard in the US and parts of Europe. This equal pay for people who already make millions and their tax evasions makes me ill.
Ok much to address but have limited time. So start with a name Iris I am sure Eden can attest I covered the tax accusations in some detail but will go over them again when I have time. This should address the rest of you if not haters or whatever ever you call yourselves.
The tax avoidance claims came form the Panama Papers. This information was on pulic web site. I have expertise in computers and knowledge of Wealth management. The information on the site supports Emmas assertion that she used the off shore account to protect the location of her house.
This is because buying house in UK rather than through an off shore option means anyone could fine the location. To reiterate the structure used by Emma's people to create the off shore entity would not be suitable for tax avoidance purposes.
Hope that clarifies the matter.
Feminist chose to be such please respect our life choices
Everyone should just ignore this anon who continuously rambles about "collectivism" and "SJWs" and "groupthink" and the like. You cannot reason with them, as their point of view is not based upon reason and is completely immune to any interjection of it. So just ignore them and maybe, hopefully they'll go away and stop casting such a revolting shadow.
It's you who cast the revolting shadow on anyone who would remain a freethinking being.
don't tell me who to ignore; i tend to ignore ross and pdxp, because there are no solid arguments. Other people on the board have good arguments, even if they are not in Emma's favor.
It is true celebrities get way too much pay for self presentation. Some of them did not even high school. Talent is over-synthesized and give human-kind very little. If one reads all the scandal celebrities have for attention is disgusting. One thing to say about emma, she has kept herself from scandal, and that is admirable in that business, but she has become unreal. Like one anon said, she is taking credit for what other feminists have worked for for years, and she was chosen by the UN because she is a known face not because of her capabilities. think she is stretching herself too thin, where in actuality she is doing nothing of real consequence.
Emma has taken credit only for what she has done I have seen nothing anywhere to suggest otherwise. She has been recognised for a revival in feminism along with other prominent women.
i'm not sure if I agree with you but I respect the fact that you took the time to explain yourself :).
But in general I think that Emma hasn't done enough if you think about the fact that this HeForShe thing is ALL she's doing right now, and I think she hasn't achieved as much as she might have wanted and didn't really achieve anything shows and that is measurable. But I don't think we can convince each others opinion, so maybe we should just agree to disagree. I do admire your loyalty for Emma though :)
*that shows
"don't tell me who to ignore; i tend to ignore ross and pdxp, because there are no solid arguments. Other people on the board have good arguments, even if they are not in Emma's favor. "
Funny, as I am one of the few (there are others) who actually uses reason and facts, and am continuously asking others do the same. Your bias is showing, and it's not pretty.
"It's you who cast the revolting shadow on anyone who would remain a freethinking being."
lol. The old 'nutty conspiracy theorist accusing normal, rational, intelligent people of being close-minded' routine. How transparent.
Iris, I think it's easy to say "they should be doing more" from a removed 20/20 position that doesn't see all the inner workings or know everything that's truly going on, but this is something I could "agree to disagree" on.
BTW, if you're going to post under a name, I'd like to recommend doing a quick and painless registration with Blogger. That way you can pick a handle without needing it to be connected with your real name and all the privacy concerns that go along with that. I'd hate for some of these anons to have my real credentials.
Hmm yeah you're right about it that we don't know what's truly going on. I think Im not so exited about Emma's project because I can't really see what changes her actions cause. Not in numbers or real examples in how it improved people's lives, you know what I mean? And of course that doesn't mean nothing is happening, but it's why I feel this way and "expected more" or someting. But again you're right; we don't see everyhing thats happening.
And thanks for the last tip! Will look into it
^ Exactly. I just know from my own line of work, months and months go into concepts and analysis and drawings and coordination before deliverables are produced. For bigger projects, years. It's not uncommon for people who don't know my line of work well to say to me "I thought you were working on X"? When ground hasn't been broken yet a year later.
Much to do about nothing!
Quite so anonymous Emma should consider Shakespeare what do you think PDXP she would be great. ;-)
A comedy would be interesting, I do think she has the comedic sensibility to pull it off :P
Yes, she should!
"real cedentials"? are you FBI. CIA or Scotland Yard? Wow, I am impressed.
Coming form an anonymous account with no hint of iron yet.
"irony"
@anon nope, but going by some of the extreme instability and manic hatred exhibited in some of these comments, I wouldn't be revealing my name if it were Clark Kent, ya dig?
I seem to be out of the loop - can someone tell me what SJW stands for please. Thank you.
It stands for social justice warrior its normally used as a derogatory term for people promoting progress social views, like Feminist, environmental activist vir example.
The PDXP is the one that mentioned his credentials. I thought the FBI ? was funny. Have a sense of humor. Maybe someone is so important and can't afford to register blog- but is interested in the arguments. One is free to do so. Not all anons cut down. The argument is the argument not the anon. Who cares if the anon has a name-just argue subject matter.
Cutie_Pie
Both Anonymous, kind of scary people. I like Emma and we share principles. You both have different views. Maybe check some definitions of terms and ease up on the intensity all friends here. :)
"I seem to be out of the loop - can someone tell me what SJW stands for please. Thank you."
As Ross said, it stands for "social justice warrior", and is supposed to be a derogatory word for someone who's perceived to be over-the-top in their advocacy.
In practice, internet-people use it overly liberally to describe ANYONE who stands up for people's rights and for equality in any respect. Think bigotry is bad? You're a SJW. Don't think a racist joke is funny? You're a SJW. Think people should be treated equally in society? You're a SJW. Don't think it's cool to make fun of autistic people? SJW. Not into rape? SJW. And so on. If you enter the cesspool of Youtube comments, let alone even more vulgar corners of the internet, you'll see comments like this in troves. I don't recommend it, though.
"Maybe someone is so important and can't afford to register blog- but is interested in the arguments."
I don't see any reason why anyone couldn't have a blogger account. It's virtually the same as being anonymous, only the people here in the comments can put a name to your posts, and makes it easier to say who's saying what.
"The argument is the argument"
The thing is, you have some anons on here reposting the same 'arguments', if they can even be called that, on virtually every blog post. If you've been here a while you can identify them by their regurgitated monomania and writing style (there's only 2, maybe 3 of them), but to the casual observer they appear to be different people.
lol. Sounds legit.
You people are weird like you are on the top of the world, but are not.
Reece
Thanks everyone for explaining what SJW stands for as I'd not heard the expression before. :)
Emma brings put the positive in Most us Reece. And there nothing wrong with a little weird if it makes you happy.
