Did Emma Watson's fashion line really make a flop?

The Daily Mail posted 5 days ago an article titled "Emma's dream is over after fashion line flops". According to "a source", "Emma was so disappointed. But even at knockdown prices, the clothes were still sitting on the shelves. She’s also stalled on plans to do more with Ferretti because she doesn’t have time."

This rumour spread all over the internet but Safia Minney, People Tree’s founder and CEO, talked to Ecouterre.
“Emma is a very good actress and a sensitive person with an ethical and ecological vision that perfectly embodies People Tree’s vision and philosophy,” Minney tells Ecouterre. “The collection was amazing, was received very well by clients and press, and sold well. We are very happy about this opportunity with Emma.” Not only did People Tree close 2011 with a 10 percent increase in online sales, Minney adds, but it also increased its orders of fair-trade and organic cotton by 150 percent in 2012 alone.
Another flop from the Daily Mail. They should choose their "sources" more wisely.

Ezra Miller and Safia Minney talk about Emma Watson

"You better gird your loins," Perks actor Ezra Miller told me the other day while promoting his newest flick, Beware the Gonzo. "When it comes to Emma people just have no idea. People have no idea what they're in for. It's great!"

How exactly did the partnership with the actress Emma Watson come to be?

It was her mother that knew someone on our board – an Oxford Professor who works a lot on fair-trade. A meeting was set up and it went from there! I think we very much wanted the same things – a collection that spoke to younger people but also had the integrity of being 100% fair-trade. She was really creative, really open-minded and absolutely lovely to work with. We took her out to Bangladesh this time last year and she was stunned by the level of artistry and hand-skills that go into making product. She was very involved and thinks about things very deeply, which was just wonderful.

Emma Watson contributes to 'Naked Fashion'

First of all, no, Emma won't pose naked (I precise, just in case).

The book 'Naked Fashion' offers advice and tips on how to make a difference for those who have an active interest in where our clothes come from or want a career in fashion and the media. Fashion designers and creatives from many fields, including photographers, illustrators and film makers, talk about what they are doing differently to change the fashion and media industry from within. With features on up-cycling, how to change the high street and an ethical brand directory, the book supplies inspiration for how to achieve style with substance.

'I still find it hard to convey how much Fair Trade means to those producing our fashion – it’s just so impressive to see how the women have used Fair Trade to escape poverty and empower themselves and their children.' Emma Watson

This is one of few books to analyse fair trade, ethical fashion and entrepreneurship, written by one of the most respected women in the industry. It’s a highly visual publication, featuring studio shots, street pics and illustrations. Many of the contributions come from celebrity supporters of fair trade and ethical fashion and the book is supported by a number of internationally recognized designers, photographers and bloggers.

'The whole idea of machinery is that people have more time for leisure and culture, and yet that isn’t at all what’s happened. The opposite has happened – the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.' Vivienne Westwood

The book will be available 1 September 2011

Some excepts inside the book:
"As the actor Emma Watson explains, Fair Trade fashion brings genuine and measurable results to some of the world's most vulnerable communities."

Chapter 5: Designing a new industry
Emma Watson, actor and People Tree collaborator, visits Bangladesh.

Emma Watson's collection revealed and to purchase

She gave the name of her friends and family to the clothes XD

First picture of Emma Watson's collection for People Tree released

In what will be her third and final collection with the Fair Trade fashion brand the collection takes on a more mature look.

The main collection will officially launch on 28 February 2011 to celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight and promoted through a special mail order catalogue with Emma Watson modeling throughout.

“I designed the collection last year after I’d started university in the US. Safia, People Tree’s founder, and Misato, People Tree’s designer, came out to work with me in Rhode Island. Together we decided on all the colours, fabrics, shapes and craft skills. Most of all, we took care to design a really wearable collection that truly celebrates the traditional skills of People Tree’s Fair Trade groups around the world.” said Emma Watson.

A preview collection of 9 styles goes on sale today featuring jersey harem pants, blazers and draped dresses as well as a striking silk gingham check dress and a polka dot tea dress.

[EDIT Dec, 22] Emma Watson’s third collection with People Tree will be launched during Fair Trade Fortnight in February

Comme le titre l'indique, la troisième collection d'Emma pour People Tree sera révélée en février pendant le fair Trade Fortnight.
10. What was it like working with Emma Watson? Will she continue to design for People Tree?
“Emma initially contacted People Tree almost two years ago and since then has been learning and developing a very deep interest in Fair Trade. Emma has worked with People Tree on two collections to date, helping to bring these issues to a new generation. Keen to experience the benefits of Fair Trade firsthand, and the terrible realities of fashion, Emma accompanied People Tree to Bangladesh to talk to some of the people who have been making our clothes. Emma Watson’s third collection with People Tree will be launched during Fair Trade Fortnight in February.”
