First, it's just hair, it's not like the long hair was really an important characteristic of Sam, and second, it's the author of the book who is making the movie so he's not destroying his own book.
Firstly, how could they destroy the book when it is the author of the book that wrote the script and is directing. It took Stephen so long to get funding because he wanted almost complete control of it. Secondly its not a big deal. For example in Harry Potter Dan doesnt have green eyes and isn't tall, Rupert isn't tall and thin and doesn't have freckles and for all bar goblet of fire he hasn't had long hair like Ron does in the book, and also for the first couple of movies Emma didn't have buck teeth and for the last few hasn't had bushy hair. This however hasn't been a problem to the vast majority of people despie millions of them being people who have read the books. It hasn't affected me seeing the movies or I think detracted from the movies or the characters in anyway way. Things like hairstyle are minor issues that most people don't care about, even fans are willing to ignore stuff like that as long as the characters personality comes across right and they don't change the essence of the character. If the author of the book goes with Sam looking like that I as a fan of perks have no problems with that, I don't think sams hair was iconic or defined her in anyway. People need to relax about these things.
Also it's difficult to even see Emmas hair (tho I presume it's short and is just the way Emma has her hair at the mo) because some has their arms around her, it's looks like it's Erin who plays Alice.
Oh common the shhoting is on since a frew weeks already!!! I'm sure they chose to keep her short hair for a reason because in my week for marilyn she is wearing a wig so if they really wanted sam to have long hair they would have put her a wig with long hair! Anyway a few centimeters of hair don't destroy a whole book people! Emma Watson was probably chosen for her talent, a little bit for her fame, and the positive image she give of herself. I'm sure the director is doing the right thing!
A) Nobody has their arms around Emma. It looks like a scarf. You can see the guy next to her has his hands in front of him on his lap. B) Does anyone remember the other photos of Emma filming Perks? She wore a wig in those photos. Obviously people forgot that... They wouldn't just give her character short hair in the middle (or end) of the movie.
The only other photos we have are of her doing rocky and she would have worn a wig for Janet. There is someone sitting slightly behind Emma and Ezra, from a different angle you'd see them better, here you can see the top of their head and they have their arms around Emma. It looks like arms and not a scarf.
Zoom in, what's running from right to left on the photo under Emmas chin is an arm, you can see the hand, i think theres another hand on top of her right shoulder as well. And just above Emmas head, to the right as your looking at her is the top of someones head, you can see their parting. It's an odd angle but there's someone just behind them. Emma is wearing a scarf as well.
@Anonymous-- That is Emma's left arm touching the right side of her shirt collar. The person whose top of the head you see is further back behind the two people standing behind Emma and Ezra.
And as far as Emma not wearing a long haired wig or extensions for her role as Sam, it may be because she couldn't do it for a medical reason.
The hand you see is Emma's scarf I think. And above Emma's head it's the wall, there's a shadow so it can seem to be a head (I thought it was at first too).
i really dont get the big fuss about it.i love this book but i also trust Stephen Chbosky. i guess as the author he has quite an idea about the characters and what the look like.
seriously relax. a movie will never be as you imagine it when you read the book. not even the near perfect LotR movies.

I watched carefully and it's definitely a scarf for me, I don't see any head either.

@Eden-- You're right. I can see the bricks more clearly now.
Emma wore a wig for Janet and for MWWM so I doubt the nit wearing a wig is a medical decision, I think it's just a style decision.
